Gold Panning Principles

Gold, being among the densest elements, can be reclaimed using solely gravity and a gold pan! When material containing rocks, sand, iron, and gold particles is stirred, the heavier elements like gold and iron segregate from the lighter materials such as sand, dirt, and rock. Throughout the panning procedure, gold essentially settles to the pan's bottom. By carefully agitating the material in your pan, you ensure the separation of nearly all the gold, which becomes yours to keep!

Where to Pan for Gold

Numerous countries boast abundant alluvial gold, left behind by flowing water. Investing time in researching an area and pinpointing the ideal location significantly boosts your chances of success. Seek out panning material in rock crevices and around the bases of rocks and boulders, where gold is prone to being trapped. The crucial strategy involves excavating as deeply as feasible for your material, as water activity has already initiated the downward movement of gold particles through the soil.

Types of Gold Panning

Two primary techniques exist: wet panning and dry panning. Wet panning demands less skill to master as it involves creating a liquid suspension of the panning material. This facilitates gravity's action, swiftly gathering the heavier gold in the riffles. Wet panning can be conducted in any sufficiently deep water where you can submerge your pan and manipulate it.

Multiple Panning Zones for Maximum Gold Recovery

It’s like having three gold pans in one! There is a standard smooth sidewall, PLUS coarse and fine sidewall riffles (15" pan) to catch all sizes of alluvial gold particles efficiently so you don’t miss any. The coarse riffles easily trap the larger gold nuggets to help you quickly discard unwanted gravel, whilst the fine riffles capture the tiny gold specks – this can add up to big gold fast!

What are Riffles?

Riffles are the graduated grooves in the side of the gold pan that capture gold as water containing sand and sediment flows across them. The 15" Pro Gold pan has both coarse and fine riffles. Generally, coarse riffles are for separating larger material, and fine riffles are for separating very small particles.

What is Black Sand?

Black sand is made up of alluvial sand consisting predominantly of grains of heavy dark minerals or rocks, and is commonly found with placer (or alluvial) gold. Black sand containing iron particles is magnetic and a good indicator of possible gold deposits nearby.

Practice!

Before venturing out in search of gold, you can practice your panning technique! Simply obtain some small gold nuggets or lead pieces and blend them with gravel and dirt. Panning for these known samples offers an excellent opportunity to comprehend the dynamics of your material as you manipulate it, ultimately enhancing your confidence and success in the field!
